Aquatic Therapy

Aquatic therapy adds the unique properties of water to physical therapy. The buoyancy of water aids in decreasing pressure on joints and increasing ease of movement, so this treatment is especially useful to treat arthritis, neurological disorders, joint and spine pain and postoperative orthopaedic conditions.

Columbia St. Mary’s Port Washington Rehabilitation Clinic features an aquatic therapeutic pool. The water in this state-of-the-art pool is maintained at a warmer temperature than a traditional swimming pool, helping to soothe aching muscles and joints and relax the body to aid in freedom of movement.

Aquatic therapy is provided at the following Columbia St. Mary's location:

  • Reaction time
  • Visual acuity
  • Decision making and judgment.

They are expert in identifying the changes associated with a variety of illness and injuries and can tailor evaluations and interventions to each patient’s needs.

Dry Needling

Sometimes after injury or due to poor muscle mechanics, portions of a muscle can become tight and fibrous. When this happens, that portion of the muscle cannot move and function normally, which can cause significant pain in and around that muscle. This is called a Trigger Point. Columbia St. Mary’s offers a unique treatment option to restore the function of the muscle and to eliminate the pain associated with these Trigger Points.

Dry needling uses a very small gauge filament needle which is inserted into the trigger point to release the tight, fibrous portion. This causes some mechanical and chemical changes within the muscle and surrounding tissues which results in significant reduction in pain and improvement in the function of the muscle.

Dry needling is provided at the following Columbia St. Mary's locations:
