Candidates for Palliative Care

Palliative care can be started at any stage of a serious illness and works in conjunction with your routine medical care. Talk with your doctor if you have experienced the following to see if palliative care is right for you:Two Monarch butterflies on a flower.

  • Pain and other unpleasant symptoms that are hard to control

  • Frequent hospitalizations

  • Admittance into the intensive care unit more than once during a hospital stay, or within six months

  • Slow progress towards discharge

  • Differences of opinion between patients and their families, or patients and physicians, over healthcare goals

  • End-stage dementia

  • Assisted breathing through a respirator for more than 72 hours

  • Uncertain prognosis with declining function
