When a better technology is discovered, we believe everyone should have access to it.
Columbia St. Mary’s is the first and only hospital system in southeastern Wisconsin with the capability to provide 3D mammography for ALL patients at all of our breast imaging locations.
The benefits of 3D mammography are numerous and well established. A study published in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) looked at 454,850 breast screening examinations and found 3D mammography detects 41 percent more invasive breast cancers and decreases the rate of false positives by up to 40 percent. This means cancer is caught earlier, patients often require less treatment; and therefore, experience fewer side-effects. The reduction in false positives also reduces the stress and anxiety for women who may have needed additional imaging to clarify an unclear area.
Know that 2D screening mammography is available at all Columbia St. Mary’s sites. Yet, 3D imaging is our recommended approach to breast imaging. We base this on independent studies as well as our own very extensive experience using 3D imaging over the past several years.
Columbia St Mary’s strongly believes that the 3D/2D combination makes a significant impact in breast cancer detection.
