Milwaukee Health Care Systems Join Forces to Present Cover the Uninsured Week Events April 20-27, 2007

Milwaukee, Wis., April 17 — Milwaukee area leading health systems and social service organizations are joining forces during Cover the Uninsured Week (CTUW) April 20 – 27 to further raise awareness of the plight of the uninsured in southeastern Wisconsin.  A number of events being held to address the uninsured issue will be open to the public. 

In Wisconsin, there are an estimated 85,000 children and 530,000 adults without health insurance, according to CUTW research

CTUW is an annual national event funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to raise awareness of those without health insurance. 

Participating organizations for the 2007 CTUW events include Columbia St. Mary’s Hospitals and Clinics, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, Aurora Health Care, ProHealth Care, Milwaukee Health Care Partnership, Wisconsin Hospital Association, the Hunger Task Force, Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Madre Angela Dental Clinic, IMPACT, and the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.  Ascension Health, the national sponsor of Columbia St. Mary’s, is providing local funding support.  Ascension Health is the nation’s largest Catholic and nonprofit health system.

Cover The Uninsured Week events include:

“WTMJ-TV/Channel 4 Phone Bank”
Representatives of the participating organizations will staff a phone bank sponsored by WTMJ-TV/Channel 4 during Channel 4s early evening news time between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. Viewers can call in with questions about health insurance and access to care issues.

“Milwaukee’s Community Health Centers:  Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”

This reception and subsequent panel discussion are designed to:

  • Share local successes that preserve and extend the health care to all.
  • Highlight and build awareness of the Milwaukee’s federally qualified health centers (FQHC) their history, role, and importance in caring for uninsured and underinsured and promoting healthy communities.
  • Recognize contributions of volunteers, health professionals, as well as foundations and businesses that have committed time and resources to support the work of Milwaukee Community Health Centers.
  • Provide opportunity for local advocates, leaders, and health system representatives to engage in “Call-to-Action” to support sustainability/increase funding for FQHC’s.

5th Annual Interfaith Prayer Breakfast--The Health Ministry at Cross Lutheran Church
Featured Speaker: Reverend Joseph Ellwanger
, former pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Birmingham, Ala.  Religious and community leaders have been invited to hear representatives from Cross Lutheran Church’s health clinic share information and stories about the clinic and those who are served by it.
