Columbia St. Mary's Hospitals are certified as Primary Stroke Centers from the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals

Friday, April 20, 2007

A Primary Stroke Center follows national standards and guidelines for providing rapid stroke assessment and treatment, and significantly improves recovery outcomes for stroke patients. That means we have in place the staff and protocols to recognize stroke patients when they enter any of our emergency departments and provide a fast response for treating stroke.

Columbia St. Mary's is proud to have received Primary Stroke Center Certification at all three hospitals:

What are the benefits of a Primary Stroke Center Certification?

When you or someone you love is having a stroke, every second counts in getting the best available treatment to provide the best possible recovery.

If you experience any of the stroke warning signs, it is important to know you are going to a medical facility that can help you or a loved one as quickly as possible.

The Primary Stroke Center Certification Program uses the recommendations for Primary Stroke Centers published by the Brain Attack Coalition and the American Stroke Association statements for stroke. This program, implemented by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Hospital Organizations (JCAHO), evaluates the stroke care provided by hospitals.

Hospitals are evaluated and receive a certification decision based on an assessment of the following components:

  1. Compliance with consensus-based national standards.
  2. Effective use of primary stroke center recommendations and clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care.
  3. Performance measurement and improvement activities.

JCAHO awards certification for one year to primary stroke centers that successfully demonstrate compliance in all three areas. A one-year extension is contingent on submitting an acceptable assessment of compliance with standards, and performance measurement and management activities. Primary stroke centers receive an on-site review every two years by JCAHO.

The certification raises consumer awareness and education in selecting a medical facility to provide rapid stroke treatment.
