Wednesday, April 30, 2008

Milwaukee, Wis., April 29, 2008—Columbia St. Mary’s is pleased to announce that all three of its hospitals, Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Milwaukee, Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Columbia, and Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Ozaukee have been recognized by the American Stroke Association with its “Get with the Guidelines Bronze Performance Achievement Award” for quality improvement.

The certification reconfirms that Columbia St. Mary’s has the processes, quality of care and comprehensive medical staffing in place to provide the highest level of care for patients undergoing a stroke.

The guidelines are based on the findings from decades of randomized clinical trials and observational studies that suggest that when hospitals incorporate certain key elements of stroke treatment in one centralized, coordinated protocol, they can save lives and improve patient care and outcomes.

Key elements of primary stroke centers include acute stroke teams, stroke units, written care protocols, and an integrated emergency response system. Important support services include availability and interpretation of computed tomography scans 24 hours everyday and rapid laboratory testing.

All three of Columbia St. Mary’s Hospitals are accredited as primary stroke centers by The Joint Commission of Accreditation for Hospital Organizations.  Columbia St. Mary’s is the only health system in the State with all its hospitals designated as primary stroke centers.
