Cardiovascular Centers of Excellence at Two East Side Hospitals Consolidate at
Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Columbia to Accommodate Construction
Milwaukee, Wis., June 6, 2008 . . . Columbia St. Mary’s today announced it is consolidating its Cardiovascular Centers of Excellence at its two east side hospitals to Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Columbia, 2025 E. Newport Avenue, effective Monday, June 9, 2008, to accommodate construction of the new Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Milwaukee. The full cardiovascular program will move back to Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Milwaukee in January 2010 when the new hospital opens. During this interim time (June 9, 2008 – January 2010), cardiac catheterizations and heart surgery will not be performed at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Milwaukee, 2323 N. Lake Drive.
“The consolidation provides a tremendous opportunity to provide a centralized cardiovascular Center of Excellence on Milwaukee’s east side in preparation for the opening of Columbia St. Mary’s new Cardiovascular Institute at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Milwaukee in January 2010,” said Dr. Melish Thompson, chairman of Cardiology at Columbia St. Mary’s. “The consolidation will ensure increased quality and safety, cost savings, and a dedicated team approach,” he said.
A new 11-bed Cardiac Specialty Unit at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Columbia will make it a center of excellence for heart care,” said Deborah Hallada-Haase, director of Patient Services.
“Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Milwaukee patients should not experience any difference in their care,” said Dr. Thompson. He added that patients will be cared for by the same physicians and many of the same nurses.
A full cardiovascular program continues at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Ozaukee in Mequon.

Columbia St. Mary’s is transforming health care for its heart patients by its nationally recognized physicians, new Vascular Institute, Interventional Peripheral Vascular Procedures, Electrophysiology Program, Women’s Heart Program, clinical research, minimally invasive approaches to heart valve surgery, Dual Source 64-slice CT, accredited stroke centers and exceptional door-to-balloon times.
