Madre Angela Clinic Gets New Location, New Name

Tuesday, December 01, 2009

Milwaukee, Wis., December 1, 2009 — For 10 years, Madre Angela Dental Clinic, supported by Columbia St. Mary’s Health System, has provided high-quality free and low-cost dental services to disadvantaged people in Milwaukee. Beginning on December 9, Columbia St. Mary’s will continue its mission to care for the underserved at a new, larger space at 1730 S. 13th Street with the new name St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Dental Clinic. Madre Angela Dental Clinic has been located at 1309 S. Cesar E. Chavez Drive, Milwaukee.

Madre Angela Dental Clinic will close its doors on December 2, 2009 at its current location. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Dental Clinic will begin to see patients on December 9, 2009 at its new location.

The clinic served more than 4,500 patients last year; approximately 1,500 at the clinic and 3,000 children in the community through its Smart Smiles School-based Oral Health Program.

At 5,000 square feet, the new clinic is 40 percent larger than the old clinic. “We will continue to work with urgent care patients and do all the other work we did including the Smart Smiles preventative care program, but we can now expand our work with children who need referrals for dental work, “said Bill Solberg, Columbia St. Mary’s Director of Community Services. The expansion will also help to ensure that the clinic will be positioned to address the growing dental needs of the community well into the future.

Renovation of the 13th Street location began with a grant from the Daughters of Charity Mission and Ministry Fund for $422,000 and a matching grant of $422,000 from the State of Wisconsin Oral Health Access Program. Additional fundraising is continuing to complete the work that is being done.

The clinic was named after St. Elizabeth Ann Seton as she was the foundress of the Daughters of Charity in the United States. In addition, “She was a wife and mother of five children, so it ties in nicely with expanded purpose of the clinic to serve children,” Solberg said.

With a larger, more accessible office space, it will be easier to attract volunteer dentists to the clinic, Solberg said. “We will have state-of-the-art equipment including digital radiology, which will mean X-rays will be available almost immediately. We will also have dental practice management software for appointments, billing and dental records,” he said. There will be ample parking.

An open house of the new St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Dental Clinic is scheduled for February 18th at 4:00 p.m.
