Milwaukee, Wis., February 22, 2010 — Columbia St. Mary’s today announced the appointment of Bruce McCarthy, MD, to the new position of Executive Vice President of Columbia St. Mary’s, Inc. and President of Columbia St. Mary’s Physician Division.
In this role, Dr. McCarthy will serve as the senior physician executive with direct line responsibility for Columbia St. Mary’s Community Physicians (CSMCP) and Madison Medical Affiliates (MMA). CSMCP and MMA consist of more than 200 physicians within primary care and multi-specialty practices located throughout Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington and Sheboygan counties. In addition, Dr. McCarthy will serve in a leadership capacity at Ascension Health, helping the national system develop and implement innovative approaches to physician-hospital integration. Dr. McCarthy will join Columbia St. Mary’s on May 1.
Dr. McCarthy has more than 20 years of strong research, clinical and administrative experience. He joins Columbia St. Mary’s from Allina Medical Clinic in Minneapolis, MN where he served as Chief Medical Officer. Prior to that, he held several positions at Henry Ford Health System, Detroit, MI., including Senior Investigator, Center for Health Services Research; Medical Director, Southern Region, Henry Ford Medical Group; Medical Director, Medicare Managed Care Program; and Director, General Internal Medicine Fellowship Program.

In 2008, Dr. McCarthy was named one of the Top 100 Health Care Leaders by the Minnesota Physician newspaper, he was honored as an Acclaim Award Honoree by the American Medical Group Association, and he received the HealthPartners Innovations in Health Care Award.
A native of Detroit, Michigan, Dr. McCarthy earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Zoology and his Doctor of Medicine Degree at the University of Michigan. In addition, he earned a Master of Public Health Degree at Boston University. Dr. McCarthy and his wife, Sue, have three children.
