Columbia St. Mary's Cancer Center Receives Two National
The American College of Radiology and
the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers
Milwaukee, WI, November 10, 2010 – This fall, the Columbia St. Mary’s Cancer Center was granted a three-year, fullaccreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), administered by the American College of Surgeons.That same week, the Radiation Oncology Department was also granted a three year national accreditation by the American College of Radiology (ACR).
“These accreditations are important because each shows that Columbia St. Mary's is more than a community hospital; It is a place where patients receive superior care,” said Laura Potts, executive director of the Columbia St. Mary's Cancer Center.“Both the NAPBC and ACR accreditations ensure the highest quality in staff and technology.”
NAPBC and ACR, join the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in recognizing excellence at Columbia St. Mary's Cancer Center.In 2007, the Columbia St. Mary's Cancer Center was selected as by the NCI as the first cancer center in Wisconsin to participate in the National Community Cancer Center Program (NCCCP). Today, the Cancer Center is one of 30 in the United States participating in this growing program, working to bridge the gap between community hospitals and our nation’s largest research institutions.

The NAPBC accreditation was awarded to the Columbia St. Mary's Breast Center for having demonstrated a firm commitment to offering patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease.The NAPBC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to the improvement in the quality of care and monitoring outcomes for patients with breast diseases.This mission is pursued through standard-setting, scientific validation, and patient and professional education.Its board membership includes professionals from 15 national organizations that reflect the full spectrum of breast care.
About the American College of Radiation Accreditation
The ACR-ASTRO accreditation for radiation oncology was awarded to both the Constance Walker Radiation Oncology Department at Columbia St. Mary's HospitalMilwaukee and Heitz Radiation Oncology Department at Columbia St. Mary's Hospital Ozaukee for exceptionally high practice standards.After a comprehensive evaluation of both radiation oncology facilities by a board certified physician and medical physicist, the personnel, facility practices, and equipment of each department was reviewed and assessed for quality. The objectives of this peer-reviewed assessment are to continue quality improvement in radiation oncology facilities and give patients a measurement for the highest quality of comprehensive care.
