Question: Emergency Medicine has become so advanced in the last decade. What services does Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Ozaukee offer?
The Emergency Department (ED). Only a few small words, but they immediately conjure a wide array of thoughts and emotions.
As a Level III trauma center, Columbia St. Mary’s Ozaukee Emergency Department treats nearly 18,000 patients every year. Having worked or been a patient in numerous EDs throughout the years, I know that experience matters and that the capability of an ED is dependent on a hospital’s programs and staff.
For more than 70 years, Columbia St. Mary’s has continued to develop clinical excellence in emergency medicine in order to provide the best care for the residents of Ozaukee County and surrounding communities. Because of that commitment, our Emergency Department consistently ranks among the nation’s top 10 percent for patient satisfaction.
The following are just a few examples of what our ED offers:
Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Ozaukee is a comprehensive Certified Stroke Center, meaning our stroke treatment protocols ensure the fastest, most appropriate treatments for stroke patients.
We are an Accredited Chest Pain Center as well as a UnitedHealth Premium® Cardiac Specialty Center, meaning we’re able to treat almost any cardiac issue that comes through our doors and perform emergency cardiac procedures such as open heart surgery.
We offer advanced cardiac procedures such as a trans-radial approach to heart catheterizations (access through the wrist instead of the groin, which reduces pain, bleeding and length of hospital stay), as well as our brand new Electrophysiology Lab. Any and all of your cardiac needs are expertly handled here.
We implemented therapeutic hypothermia (a way to decrease the body temperature to prevent tissue damage during a stroke or heart attack) years before it was even commonplace in teaching institutions.
As an advanced, certified trauma program, we continually provide training and education for our local EMS providers. This training ensures that EMTs and Columbia St. Mary’s hospital staff work in partnership from the time you call 911 to the time you reach our ED.
We do all this with a focus on treating our ED patients as quickly as possible.
This year, Columbia St. Mary’s is making a bold promise. Starting in February, the Emergency Department at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Ozaukee is instituting a 30-minute guarantee. That means within 30 minutes of checking in, you will meet with a doctor.
For more than 70 years, we’ve been the go-to hospital for the Ozaukee community. Now, we’re not only the best, we’re the fastest.
The staff at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Ozaukee are your neighbors,
friends and family. Everything you need in an Emergency Department,
including the most highly skilled staff and the most advanced treatment,
is at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Ozaukee. Although we’d rather not
have to see you in our ED, we’re doing everything we can to make sure
that if you do have to visit, you get the best care possible.
